P16 Curriculum

'Enjoy Learning, Prepare for Life'

Our ambitious P16 curriculum will empower students to be as independent as they can be which prepares them well for their lives post school. Focused teaching enables students to develop skills via three specified strands - work-related learning, independent living and life skills and health, wellbeing and relationships with informed opportunities to practically apply and rehearse skills learned. Functional skills are a vital element of our curriculum offer, encouraging students to use and apply their literacy, numeracy and ICT skills to increasingly complex situations. We recognise the interests and aspirations of all students and therefore support them in developing skills to become increasingly able to lead healthy, safe and fulfilling lives within their local/ wider community.

Our Post 16 provision identifies three pathways to ensure teaching is relevant and meaningful and supports their long-term outcomes post school. These are:

  • Pathway 1 - Therapeutic
  • Pathway 2 - Independence
  • Pathway 3 - Pre-vocational

Pathway 1 – This pathway has an enhanced focus on Health,  Well-being and Relationships Preparing for Adulthood Strand with appropriate opportunities  provided to access experiences of Work Related Learning and Independence skills. Learning outcomes for students who follow this within Post 16 are identified from their EHCP outcomes. Following a period of observation using the Engagement model, key personalised areas of learning are identified within Cognition and Learning. This ensures all learning is fully informed; targets identified are personalised and delivery is relevant and meaningful which can include sessions where they join their Post 16 peers in teaching sessions within any of the three strands of our curriculum offer.

Pathway 2 – This pathway has an enhanced focus on Independent Life and Living Skills Preparing for Adulthood Strand. Opportunities to access learning related to Health, Well-being and Relationships alongside appropriate Work Related Learning also form part of the offer for learners on this pathway.   Functional Maths and Literacy skills are integrated into the Post 16 curriculum strands and are continued to be developed and applied to a wider range of settings, activities and environments.

Pathway 3 – This pathway will have equal focus on all 3 of the Preparing for Adulthood Strands - Health, Well-being and Relationships, Independent Life and Living Skills and Work Related Learning. Learners on this pathway will explore the pre-vocational skills needed to lead healthy, purposeful and independent lives contributing to their local communities through paid or voluntary work.

Curriculum strands

Our Post 16 curriculum has been designed over three strands each strand has a fundamental aim of assisting our students to further develop their skills, knowledge and understanding which helps prepare them well for adulthood.

  • Core/functional skills - Maths and English
  • Work related learning/Careers
  • Health, wellbeing and relationships
  • Independent living and life skills

Work Related Learning recognises that a young person’s aspirations and career thoughts/ ideas are the beginnings of their pathway to learning and work.  It is our mission to provide our students with meaningful opportunities to enable them to experience/engage in the world of work providing impartial careers information, advice and guidance and appropriate access to educational opportunities, which will support such aspirations.

Life skills and independent living; through our bespoke provision we support our students in becoming as involved and independent as possible within life skills and independent living skills to support their next steps into adult life.

Health, well-being and relationships supports our fundamental aim that all students should lead as healthy a life style as they possibly can by enabling them to be a valued member of both their school and wider communities. Students should feel safe, know how to keep themselves safe and most importantly be happy. Schools can offer personalised ‘Healthy Lifestyle’ challenges designed for each Post  16 student where relevant.
