Pupil Voice and School Council

Our school council is one of the ways that we capture pupil voice and use what we have learned to make changes and improvements in our school.  At Upper School we elect members yearly, and they meet half-termly to discuss issues and improvements that they would like to influence.  They base some of the work that they do on the pupil voice surveys (see latest results below) and as a result, this year they have planned a day of activities to support the students to be able to see the fun side of some of the activities that they were not sure about, such as graffiti writing, science experiments and a dance around the maypole!  We have also restructured our library space and created a reading nook for students to use as a quiet space as we learned from the pupil survey that some students found it difficult to relax in school.

At Lower School we have a joint Illogan School and Curnow School council, which embodies the mantra 'two schools, one community'.  This council will jointly plan for events such as Red Nose Day or Children in Need fundraising.

Our daily practice from the start of the students' time at Curnow encourages a relationship of mutual respect, where choice making and consent are at the heart of our practice.  We quickly develop an understanding of a student's likes and dislikes and in their early schooling this will be used to inform topic planning and the classroom offer.  This supports both engagement in learning and the broadening of interests outside their immediate experience, something that is developed throughout the school journey.  We encourage  autonomy through our personal development offer and through our daily interactions.  The result of this is that our students develop their confidence and ability to participate in a range of activities both in and out of school.

Our My Views documents and later the individual CV captures the students' input in the Annual Review.  Where we can, we will invite students to attend their Annual Review to give their views in person (see example below).
